Back in 2007, Alan Phillips built 5 of these amplifiers for actual owners of TW Express models. The goal was to achieve a tonal recreation of their own amplifiers. The focus was never to replicate exact circuit of their amplifiers, that, in itself with age and component drift and tolerances would never achieve the correct solution. To this end, some of the originals Alan never even opened up, just played and played and played them.  He got intimately familiar with their tone and feel through all the settings and with different guitars and speakers.
The ultimate goal was to capture the tone and feel. To do this requires a level of understanding of how someone achieved that end, but that's not the full story. By replicating exactly you are taking on the role of a  'model maker'  limited by the original design. As an engineer, this was counter-intuitive to Alan. Even with this first batch of amplifiers he made a number of departures in order to achieve a tonal goal as close as possible to what the owners had. These amplifiers were received really well from the buyers and only a couple have changed hands, often selling for much more than the original purchase price.

NEW ERA

Late in 2016 Alan went to visit Austin Guitar House in Austin TX and he was approached by an owner of one of these original 'RAW 35' models who asked if he would consider making some more of these amplifiers and make them more widely available. to not just owners of TW's, but other players who love that style but may never get the chance to own a $50k original.  Oz, the owner of Austin Guitar House overheard this conversation and asked if he would consider doing an exclusive with them.  Alan was reluctant at first, but agreed only if he could bring the amplifier to modern specifications at utilize the Auto-bias circuit, make some customizations both tonally and with features.

The limiting factor with these amplifiers is the use of true NOS tubes throughout. While the new model is very capable of safely running modern production tubes, Alan still wanted to use NOS. He has a reasonable collection of NOS Mullard, Valvo and other high quality tubes, so the first few of these amplifiers will use them.

The following is a list of updates and changes Alan has made without sacrificing the core concept of the design.

1. Higher current Power Transformer - while the plate voltages are still kept around 400V, this new transformer can deliver more current when the amplifier is pushed really hard. This equates to a more solid and intact low frequency response and no flabbiness.

2. Parallel Triode Input Stage - This reduces the noise floor considerably and increases the headroom in the first stage to work much better with pedals.

3. AutoBiasMon - This incredible circuit allows for the automatic biasing of the amplifier, based on internal measurements and its exact operating conditions at the time.  This circuit makes tube changing a breeze and also gives a 'soft start' when the standby switch is used by slowly ramping up the current flow. One particular useful feature of the AutoBiasMon circuit for this design is its ability to vary the bias when it detects grid conductance. Not only does this protect the power tubes, but it stops harsh high frequency content at extreme gain levels.

4. Mid Boost: - Alan always felt the original Express models lacked this feature. It tightens up the low end and pushes the vocal mid range frequencies more forward. Its brilliant for both lead work and rock rhythm work.

PLAYER REVIEW

Once Alan decided he was going to build this model, he contacted two owners of original TW amplifiers and customers of the original RAW 35 model to see if they were interested in the new version. They both bought one on the spot.  These are the comments once they received their amplifier:

"I just got my Raw MK 2 from Alan this week and I can't unplug from it. I had one of the original ones he made based upon a Trainwreck I owned, but man....this version is just amazingly good. The string definition and overtones are unreal. It goes from clean to scream with just the guitar's volume knob. The controls work so well...a bass control that actually works. Imagine that!!!!
I couldn't be happier. This amp is amazing! " -
