This is a silicon diode-based distortion pedal, housed in an asymmetric metal enclosure custom-designed by Rainger FX. It’s a full, tonally balanced distortion sound with a specific mid frequency-adjusted accent, and going to more all-out fuzz on high settings. The main panel knobs are ‘drive’ and ‘volume’.
On the back panel is a switch that de-stabilises an offset in the circuit – adding a new level of harmonic-sensitive ‘unstable’ fuzz tones. The pedal is hard-wired for true bypass footswitching, and comes with a rockpick – a unique double-pointed plectrum that accentuates the higher harmonics of the note, which – when used with the El Distorto – adds more attack and extra squeal.
There are no sockets on the sides – which would take up too much space, so the input and output are on antennae, out of the way on the top panel. These are Neutrik sockets which securely lock the jackplug in place, stopping any accidental unplugging during use.
In between them is the ‘DC’ in socket, though the El Distorto also can run on an internal 9v battery. The ‘angry eyebrows’ LEDs indicate ‘On/Off’.
The ‘VOL’ knob adjusts the output volume, ‘DRIVE’ does the amount of distortion, while ‘MIX’ controls the blend of guitar with white noise (going from only hiss to only guitar at the extremes).
The ‘ATTACK’ switch adds a slight rise-up to the filter at the start of a note, and ‘Q’ changes the resonance of the filter from low to high.
Originally the Dr Freakenstein Fuzz assistant, Igor is a small and light pressure-operated foot controller. It’s dual-sensitivity; just flip it over to change from a hard press to a soft press, and it can also be worked by hand. As it’s pressed, the range of the filter action rises to be at the highest level at maximum pressure.
What does the ‘offset’ switch do? It wires up the op amp in an odd way, makes the distortion slightly more bit crusher.
How is the ‘DC in’ socket configured? It’s for a regular ‘Boss’ style PSU, centre earth, sleeve +9v.
What are the PSU requirements? 9v DC, 200mA (centre earth, sleeve +9v)
What warranty does Rainger FX offer? 3 years. There shouldn’t be, but if there is a problem do get in touch.
Are Rainger FX pedals true bypass? Yes they all are.
Where are Rainger FX pedals made? All are made in the UK.
